Project: Surface Pattern Collection

Type: Individual Project

2026

This project is a collection of surface patterns. I was interested in the connection between nature and material and focused my research on cotton as a material.

Apart from its historical relevance and importance, I became interested in how the plant itself is oftentimes overlooked, even though it is so closely tied to everyday objects. Instead of creating an unrelated pattern, I wanted to directly connect the material to the pattern, putting cotton on cotton.

The goal was to translate different aspects of cotton into visual structures. The collection consists of four patterns, each showing a different perspective on the material. Together, they reference the transformation from raw material to textile.

Pattern 1: This pattern focuses on yarn spinning, referencing the texture of the prepared bulk of cleaned cotton for spinning.

Pattern 2: Focuses on the cotton fibres under a microscope.

Pattern 3: Focuses on the cotton plant itself.

Pattern 4: Shows weaving, an oftentimes final stage of cotton production.
