Project: Identity and Packaging

Type:  Group Project

2026

This project was developed for an Aalto Shop × Fiskars collaboration around a sewing kit for students. The kit is designed for sewing patches onto student overalls, while also working as a durable box that can be kept and used over time. Each Aalto school has its own variation, connecting the kit to the different communities within the university.

My contribution focused on the visual identity and surface design. I developed the variation system, starting with colours, textures, and symbols before moving towards a simpler idea based on different types of stitches. The challenge was to make each school feel recognizable without reducing it to a stereotype, while still keeping all four versions part of the same system.

In the final design, each school is represented through its official colour and a different stitch-shaped cut-out. Images of the sewing tools sit underneath, making the contents of the kit visible while the stitch becomes the main graphic element. I also worked on the final print files, printing, and the renders used to present the project

Early experiments used textures and symbols to distinguish the four schools. As the system developed, I found that too many elements were competing at once. I moved towards a simpler idea: one stitch for each school, chosen for characteristics that loosely relate to the way that field works and thinks. This made the differences more subtle while keeping all four versions part of the same system.
